Ports should begin structured planning for advanced nuclear technology now, according to a joint paper published by the British Ports Association and Lloyd’s Register. The report, Advanced Nuclear Technology Use Within Port Environments, argues that nuclear power should be considered a long-term infrastructure and operational issue rather than simply a new marine fuel. Potential applications include nuclear-powered ships, floating or transportable nuclear power units, and land-based small modular reactors (SMRs) or microreactors to supply electricity and heat, support fuel production and strengthen energy resilience. A single 100 MWe-class SMR could, in principle, meet the electricity needs of a medium-sized port and several associated industrial tenants.
