Nanolasers could significantly reduce computer energy consumption

Researchers at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) have developed a tiny nanolaser that could eventually make computers, smartphones and data centres faster while significantly reducing their energy consumption. The device, developed in a semiconductor membrane, concentrates electrons and photons in an exceptionally small area and could enable data to be transmitted using light rather than electrical signals directly inside microchips. The breakthrough was published in Science Advances.
