Experiments deliver key data for passive cooling simulations in small modular reactors

Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland have obtained new experimental data aimed at improving simulations of passive cooling systems for small modular reactors (SMRs). The experiments were carried out at the large-scale PANDA facility, designed to replicate nuclear reactor conditions, and have generated high-resolution measurements for the first time. The research work is intended to address a lack of detailed data needed to validate safety models for advanced reactor designs.
