Environmental NGOs paid by the EU Commission allegedly targeted Germany

A recent report by German media claims that the European Commission paid environmental NGOs up to €700,000 in 2023 to lobby against German companies and, in some cases, to initiate legal action. The NGOs involved include Friends of the Earth and ClientEarth. ClientEarth allegedly received €350,000 to start court cases against German coal power plants, while Friends of the Earth was reportedly tasked with opposing the EU-Mercosur free trade deal, which Germany supports but France opposes.
