Searching for geothermal resources in North Rhine-Westphalia

The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) sees great potential in geothermal energy for the heating supply. To identify the most promising locations, the Geological Service of NRW is conducting research drillings. After Krefeld, a new drilling project will begin in the northeast of Cologne in late 2025, targeting limestone layers at depths of 600 to 1,000 meters to investigate possible water-bearing cavities. The first research drilling in Krefeld has reached a depth of 885 meters, aiming for a maximum of 1,000 meters.
