Finnish university appointed to test safety of SMR designs

Finland's Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT) is set to build two new test facilities at its nuclear engineering laboratory to research the safety of small modular reactors (SMRs). One facility will model the passive decay heat removal of the LDR-50 district heating reactor developed by Finnish company Steady Energy, while the other will test the emergency core cooling tank of an undisclosed SMR based on French technology. These tests will occur from 2026-2027, with results reported in 2027-2028.
