The European Commission approved Belgian nuclear power plant lifetime extension financing plans

The European Commission has approved Belgium's revised financing plans for extending the operational lifetimes of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 nuclear power units by an additional 10 years. This decision follows Belgium's coalition government's earlier plans to shut down these reactors by 2025, but the need for energy security amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict prompted negotiations for their continued operation. The joint venture, primarily owned by Engie's Electrabel and the Belgian state, aims to provide 2 GWe of capacity while minimizing carbon emissions.
