China buys less Russian coal in 2024, increases imports from other suppliers

In 2024, China, the world's largest coal importer, reduced its coal purchases from Russia while increasing imports from other major suppliers, particularly Australia, during a record year for coal imports. According to customs data, China's coal imports reached an unprecedented 547.2 million tons, accounting for 41% of globally traded coal, which bolstered China's influence on international coal prices.
