45% renewables target of the European Commission is ambitious but feasible

EU countries, the European Commission and the European Parliament are currently discussing the target share of renewables in Europe’s energy mix in 2030. In July 2021, the European Commission suggested a 40% target but it was upped to 45% later on in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In December 2022, EU countries supported the original 40% target. Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, however, defended the increased share of renewables at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) assembly in Abu Dhabi, saying that „the target is ambitious, but feasible.”
