China approves construction of six new nuclear reactors

On 20 April, the Chinese State Council - presided over by Premier Li Keqiang - approved the contruction of six new reactors in Sanmen, Haiyang and Lufeng nuclear power plants. According to the Council, China needs nuclear energy to support economic and social development. The approvals are for Sanmen units 3 and 4, Haiyang 3 and 4 and units 5 and 6 of the Lufeng plant. The approval comes after years of preparation and comprehensive evaluation and review.
