New Energy Security Strategy of the United Kingdom

The British government has published a new Energy Security Strategy with the aim to ensure greater independence of the United Kingdom on energy imports. The Strategy's ambitions are for eight new reactors, plus small modular reactors, helping to reach 24 GWe capacity by 2050, representing about 25% of the UK's projected electricity demand. A new government body, Great British Nuclear, is being set up to start new nuclear projects at a rate of about one a year this decade. Nuclear's share of energy in the UK is currently about 16%, however most of the country's current capacity is due to be retired within a couple of years.
