China starts Baihetan hydro power plant

The giant Baihetan hydropower plant on the upstream branch of China's Yangtze river began generating electricity for the first time on Monday June 28, state broadcaster CCTV reported. The power plant's first two 1-gigawatt (GW) turbines will start commercial operation after a three-day trial. There will eventually be 16 such units in operation in Baihetan once it is fully completed in July next year. Only Three Gorges Dam has got a bigger generation capacity.
