Leningrad II-2 nuclear unit enters commercial operation

The second VVER-1200 type reactor at the Leningrad nuclear power plant began commercial operation on 22 March 2021. Leningrad II-2 unit is the fourth VVER-1200 type reactor in operation in Russia. Units with VVER-1200 reactors are also under contruction in Belarus, Finland, Hungary and Egypt. Leningrad II-2, also known as unit 6, replaces unit 2, which is an RBMK-1000 reactor that ended its 45 years of service last year.
