Wind and solar covered 10% of global electricity consumption in first half of 2020

Wind turbines and solar panels produced a record 10% of the world’s electricity in the first half of 2020. According to the independent think tank Ember, electricity generation from wind and solar sources rose by 14% compared with the same period in 2019, while output from coal plants fell by 8.3%. Global electricity demand fell by 3% during the first six months of the year due to coronavirus pandemic, the Ember report said. Despite the drop, coal plants remained an important electricity source as they produced 33% of the world’s electricity during the period.
