Three European nuclear reactors will be shut down at the end of 2019

On 20 December, the BKW’s Mühleberg nuclear power plant in Switzerland was shut down after 47 years in operation. Since 1972, the power plant, which has a single 372 MWe boiling water reactor (BWR), has generated some 130 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity. BKW decided on the plant shutdown in 2013 because of "uncertainty surrounding political and regulatory trends". The reactor core was loaded with fuel in the summer of 2018 for the last time. Decommissioning the plant is expected to take about 15 years and it will cost CHF 3 billion (approximately CZK 23.5 billion).
