Russia and Ukraine have agreeed on basic principles of gas transit

Representatives of Russia and Ukraine met in Berlin last week for very intense negotiations and agreed on basic principles of gas transport. The current agreement is due to expire at the end of 2019. Russia has agreed to send gas to Europe through Ukraine for a further five years with the option to extend the agreement by another ten years. Russia currently sends roughly 40% of its gas for Europe through Ukraine. The amount of gas flowing through Ukraine will, however, gradually decline in the coming years, because there are alternative transport routes via Nord Stream and TurkStream pipelines. Nord Stream 2 will be commissioned soon.
