EU Parliament declares climate emergency

On Thursday 28 November, European lawmakers declared an EU-wide climate emergency. It is a symbolic move which will increase pressure on the incoming European Commission to take a stronger stance on fighting climate change. EU lawmakers urged the European Commission "to fully ensure all relevant legislative and budgetary proposals are fully aligned" with the 1.5-degrees-Celsius target limit on global warming. The parliament demands that the EU cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels) to become climate neutral by 2050.
