Poland exported more electricity than it imported until 2014. Since then, domestic demand for electricity has been growing faster than production, and the difference has been covered by electricity imports from abroad. In 2017, Poland imported 2.9 TWh of electricity. In 2018, net imports reached 4.2 TWh. In the first nine months of this year, Polish electricity trades imported 8.1 TWh of electricity. The rise of imports has been also driven by a surge in wholesale electricity prices in Poland. The majority of Poland’s electricity imports came from Sweden and Germany, where average wholesale prices are lower.
