Russian floating nuclear plant sets sail for Siberia

Russia launched the world's first floating nuclear power plant, the Akademik Lomonosov for a weeklong journey through the Arctic Circle to the town of Pevek in north Siberia. The Akademik Lomonosov is a 140-meter vessel carrying two nuclear reactors. In Pevek, the vessel will replace the local, aging nuclear power plant and also supply electricity to regional oil platforms. The vessel which is manned by a crew of 69 people can also be used to desalinate sea water.
