Germany’s renewables produced more electricity than coal and nuclear power for the first time

In Germany, sun, wind, water and biomass have so far produced more electricity in 2019 than coal and nuclear power combined. Operating some coal power stations is not paying off with the current conditions on the market. Gas prices are low, CO2 emission allowance prices are high, and weather conditions are very good for solar and wind power plants this year. In the first half of 2019, 47.3% of the electricity produced in Germany came from renewable sources, while 43.4% was produced by coal-fired and nuclear power plants. Gas power plants produced 9.3% of electricity and the remaining 0.4% came from other sources.
