Italy and Tunisia will be connected by an underwater Elmed interconnector

On April 30, the governments of Italy and Tunisia signed an intergovernmental agreement for the joint construction of a 200-kilometer long 600-megawatt (MW) underwater power cable. The cable will connect electricity grid substations in Partanna, Sicily and El Haouaria, Tunisia. Construction of the Elmed power interconnector has been planned since 2003. Elmed is currently on the third list of EU Projects of Common Interest. The construction could be co-financed from EU funds. Construction is planned to start in 2023 and be in commercial operation by 2027.
