Berlin blackout raises questions over power supply stability in Germany

Recently, there was a blackout in the Köpenick district of Berlin which was unusually long, lasting over 30 hours. It left over 30,000 households and 2,000 businesses without electricity. The blackout was caused by a Swiss construction firm which cut through a 110 kV cable while working on a bridge repair. Such a vast blackout has raised doubts about the stability of the power supply in Germany. The Ministry of the Interior has admitted that there is no national emergency plan to deal with a national power cut. Each of Germany’s 16 states has its own procedures and sets of regulations.
