Renewables became the main electricity source in Germany in 2018

Experts from the Fraunhofer Institute have published a report stating that, for the first time in Germany's history, more electricity was produced in 2018 from renewables than in coal power plants. Last year, 40.3 percent of Germany’s electricity was produced in solar, wind and hydro power plants, about 38 percent in coal-fired plants and 13.3 percent in nuclear power plants. Climate change had a positive effect on the amount of electricity produced from renewable energy sources in 2018. Thanks to the hot and dry and summer, solar power plants provided 16 percent more electricity than the previous year. However, the output of hydro power plants decreased.
