The World's First HVDC Grid

ABB will supply several key components for the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) grid in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area of China designed by the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC). HVDC lines are used to transmit energy over long distances with minimal losses. The Zhangbei pilot project represents several stations connected with HVDC lines. SGCC is constructing the Zhangbei grid to bring electricity from remote wind, solar and hydro power plants to Beijing. There will be four stations connected in a ring network in the Zangbei grid, capable of transmitting 4,500 MW of electricity.
