Nuclear is part of sustainable energy mix

From May 14 to 16, the Atomexpo 2018 conference took place in Sochi, Russia. World Nuclear Association Director General Agneta Rising said at the conference that a surge in new nuclear plants connected recently to the network is helping to build a sustainable global energy mix, reduce carbon emissions and meet the rising electricity demand. From 2015 to 2019, 55 new reactors with a combined capacity of 55 GWe should be commissioned in 12 countries.

According to Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the IAEA will continue to help the world make optimal use of nuclear technology to generate low-carbon energy, and to combat the effects of climate change.

Milestones Approach helps IAEA member states understand the commitments and obligations associated with nuclear power development. Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Reviews help member states assess the status of their national infrastructure from the point of view of nuclear power development.

Agneta Rising also criticized subsidies for technologies that generate low-carbon electricity only sometimes. Because of such subsidies, nuclear power plants can be closed that generate low-carbon electricity continuously.
