Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, has published a guide to energy sector statistics which maps energy flows in the EU countries. The Czech Statistical Office has subsequently published an analysis of the energy dependence of the Czech Republic. The article contains the following maps and charts:

  • Energy production in the EU according to source (in %)
  • Energy dependence development from 1990 to 2015 (in %)

In the Czech Republic, individual sources have the following shares in the energy produced:

  • solid fuels (58.6%)
  • nuclear energy (24.2%)
  • renewable sources (14.9%)
  • other (2.3%)

With 32%, the Czech Republic is the sixth least dependent EU country on the import of fuels, mainly oil and natural gas.

There has been a continued drop in energy consumption both in the EU and the Czech Republic in recent years. The main reasons were: transfer of energy demanding industrial sectors outside the EU and energy efficiency measures.

In the Czech Republic, individual sources have the following shares on the final energy consumption:

  • oil products (27.6%)
  • natural gas (22.4%)
  • electricity (19.4%)

The Czech Republic has been a traditional industrial country. In 2015, 30.9% of energy was consumed by industry, 25.1% by households, 24.3% in the transportation sector, 10.7% in the services sector, and 2.3% in agriculture and forestry.
