The Germans revive the idea of e-fuels

In reaction to the Dieselgate scandal, German car manufacturers are trying quickly to develop hybrid and electric cars. However, some representatives of the automobile industry are unwilling to give up on diesel engines and support further development of “e-fuels”.

Matthias Wissmann, chief lobbyist of the German Automobile Industry Association (VDA), is one of them. In his opinion, e-fuels produced using renewable energy from the sun and wind can substantially reduce transport sector CO2 emissions. Technology to produce several types of synthetic fuels suitable for diesel engines is already available today but mass production has not yet started.
