Gas and oil discoveries in Cyprus’s waters spark tensions in the region

Cyprus has the potential to become a key energy player in the eastern Mediterranean region thanks to gas deposits, the extent to which is yet unknown. The government of Cyprus has asked the French energy giant Total and Italian company ENI for help with territorial waters exploration. Gas is the primary target of the drilling, but experts hope to hit oil, too.
