The European Commission has introduced the Nuclear Illustrative Programme (PINC) in which it has tried to estimate investments needed for the nuclear power stations’ safety upgrades, their safe operation and decommissioning together with the management of radioactive waste and spent fuel. European Commission plans to involve civil society in the discussion on nuclear energy.

The European Commission is asking states which plan to use nuclear power to apply the highest safety and waste management standards, and to diversify nuclear fuel supplies.

The European Commission has also issued a recommendation to Member States concerning agreements on nuclear energy with third countries. According to Article 103 of the Euratom Treaty, the Member States shall have the Commission’s opinion on such intergovernmental agreements before concluding them.
