European Parliament adopted offshore oil and gas exploitation legislation

The European Parliament adopted the EU legislative proposal on the safety of offshore oil and gas operations in the EU. The Council still needs to formally approve the Directive. The main elements of the agreed directive are the following:

  • Licensing. Clear rules for effective prevention and response of a major accident;
  • Verification by independent national competent authorities;
  • Obligatory ex ante risk assessments;
  • Independent verifiers of safety critical systems;
  • Transparent information;
  • Emergency Response;
  • Liabilities;
  • International cooperation.
