Cyprus and Egypt will be connected by a gas pipeline

Cyprus and Egypt have signed a deal on the gas pipeline construction. The pipeline will be used to export natural gas from Cyprus to Egypt. Natural gas reservoirs have been recently discovered south of Cyprus. Exploitation will start approximately in 2018. With regard to that, the new pipeline should be operational sometime between 2020 and 2022.

For Cyprus, it is not financially viable to build its own liquefied natural gas plan based on the confirmed amount of discovered gas. Liquefied gas (LNG) can be transported over long distances much better. Egypt, however, already has a facility to produce LNG. Egypt plans to use the imported gas partially for its domestic consumption and partially for re-export.
